MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: No specialized experience or training. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicant must be eligible for bonding. Function of Work: To perform routine manual work aboard a state owned marine vessel; and to collect and record tolls from boarding vehicles and/or pedestrians. Level of Work: Entry. Supervision Received: Close from Marine Engineers, Marine Chief Engineers, Marine Pilots, Marine Operators, or Marine Masters. Supervision Exercised: None. Location of Work: Department of Transportation and Development; Mississippi River Bridge Authority; Marine Operations and Statewide Marine Operations. Job Distinctions: Differs from that of a Marine Deckhand by having additional responsibility of toll collection duties. Differs from that of a Bridge Toll Collector by having additional Marine Deckhand responsibilities. Differs from that of a Bridge Toll Sergeant or Corporal by lack of supervisory responsibility over other Toll Collectors. Fastens hawsers and mooring lines to vessels, wharves, barges, piers, or pilings, and checks towing rigging, lines, wires, etc. Lowers and raises anchors by hand or by vessel's winches. Coils and splices rope and makes rope fenders. Makes eyes in cable. Operates traffic ramps and gates on vessel. Directs and parks traffic on and off of vessel. Performs routine maintenance such as cleaning, chipping, scraping, painting, changing oil and filters, polishing bright work, etc. Loads and unloads material and equipment for use on vessels. Moves swing wires. Operates bilge pumps. Assists in deck and equipment repairs. Assists in handling discharge lines and dredge anchors. Handles lines in recovery of vessels adrift. Mans and operates emergency safety equipment such as firefighting hoses, fire extinguishers, rescue boats, life rings, floats, etc. Serves as lookout to assist in safe navigation of vessel. Searches for drowning victims, recovers body, and places body in body bag. Collects toll fees from drivers of vehicles and pedestrians boarding vessels, making change as required. Sells toll script and gives receipt when requested, making changes as required. Classifies vehicles, enforces restrictions such as over-weight vehicles, and directs traffic on vessel. Counts cash received and makes deposit slip for delivery to Accounting Department. Examines bills and coins received and prepares receipt form for any monies found to be counterfeit or foreign money.
